Rewire.News is an award-winning, nonprofit daily online publication devoted to objective, fact-based reporting on reproductive and sexual health, rights, and justice, and the intersections of racial, environmental, immigration, and economic justice. Rewire.News, which has a 13+ year track record of success, publishes news, analysis, and investigative reporting created by professional journalists, editors, and multimedia experts. The organization also offers vigorous commentary, debate, and opinion rooted in fact and considered thinking. Succinctly, Rewire.News is:
The nation’s only news outlet focused specifically on fact-based journalism in the reproductive and sexual justice space
A trusted, credible source for other national, regional, and state media
The go-to publication on health and rights for policymakers, lawyers, advocates, researchers, and health providers
A producer of award-winning reporting and analysis
Its work is intended to fulfill the core role of journalism in a democratic society by fostering public knowledge and disseminating objective information on issues more commonly shrouded in misinformation and ideology.
Rewire.News’ goals are to:
proactively inform its large, growing, and engaged readership, including other journalists and media pundits, policymakers, researchers, advocates, lawyers, medical professionals, and interested publics;
challenge false, misleading, and stigmatizing reporting by other media outlets and correct the record when others fail to report the facts;
counter falsehoods and misinformationspread by those who seek political gain from undermining public health and human rights, irrespective of political party or belief;
add to the body of knowledgeand informed public debate by covering unreported and underreported issues.
Rewire.News is more than simply an online news outlet. The organization’s Board and staff recognize that this country is at a tipping point in its history and that which way it falls will depend to a great extent on the ability of credible journalism to inform the public. Rewire.News relies on evidence for all of its reporting and positions, eschews false equivalencies, believes in the separation of church and state, is unafraid to call out flaws in conventional wisdom, and does not pledge allegiance to any political party.
The next President and Editor-in-Chief of Rewire.News will step into this leadership role at a pivotal time for the organization, particularly as it fits within the broader reproductive rights and journalism landscapes. This is an opportunity to – in partnership with the Board – set a clear vision for Rewire.News. In doing so, they will build upon the publication’s trusted history as a journalistic enterprise with a strong point of view and a commitment to both education and amplification of these issues.
As the individual who both manages the organization and sets its journalistic vision, the President and Editor-in-Chief will own leadership of the internal operations, as well as the external-facing content. Internally, they will ensure that the organizational infrastructure and systems are best-in-class and at the same level of the excellence as the journalists. This leader will chart the course for a committed, talented group of geographically disparate, remotely-operating talent. They will tap into their existing strengths, while identifying opportunities to further optimize their day-to-day work and ensure their time and talents are best utilized.
As Editor-in-Chief, this person will continue to hold Rewire.News to the highest journalistic standards, simultaneously identifying and investing in contemporary, innovative ways to distribute its content. Externally, they will raise awareness of the issues of the day, ensuring visibility and arming key influencers and stakeholders with essential, and often under-reported information. In the President capacity, they will also set the strategy for and serve as the key fundraiser for this nonprofit publication, which is a critical element for the ongoing livelihood of Rewire.News.
When successful, this President and Editor-in-Chief will be able to point to outcomes in the following areas:
Further enhancing News’ reputation as a leader providing respected, objective, and high-impact reporting
Building awareness of key issues related to reproductive rights and journalism
Reinforcing organizational sustainability through diversified funding streams and increased revenue
Growing News’ audience base and overall reach
The President and Editor-in-Chief must have:
journalistic experience and/or a strong understanding of journalistic operations and the role journalism plays in supporting an informed democracy;
a passion for and familiarity with issues related to reproductive health and rights;
a mission-orientation and deep belief in News’ work;
a track record operating with a deep commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
This individual will demonstrate capacity for leadership through vision, communication, inspiration, and action, doing so in a remote, geographically disparate setting.
